Why Jesus Had To Be Tempted and What It Means For His People

Luke 4:1-13

Lies concerning temptation:

  1. Temptation is sin.
  2. God is displeased with me when I am tempted.
  3. I can overcome temptation by separation from it.
  4. If I were spiritually mature, I would no longer struggle with temptation.

 Three temptations we all face:

  1. Distrust the Father’s goodness
  2. Reject the Father’s plan
  3. Test the Father’s kindness

Questions for this week:

I.  For Starters:

  1. Have you ever been hungry or thirsty for a prolonged time and if so, what did you learn about yourself?
  2. Comedian Flip Wilson used to be known for saying, “The devil made me do it” and people would laugh. What do you think about that statement?
  3. How could focusing on the Cross of Christ make a difference with temptation? (see Romans 2:4)

II. Overview of Scripture

  1. Read Luke 4:            1-13
  2. Who orchestrated this event in the desert and what does this tell us about our own lives with God? Vs 1
  3. What does Luke want us to know about Jesus at the end of verse 2 and why do we need to know this?
  4. In your own words, how did Satan tempt Jesus?
  5. How did Jesus respond to each temptation (vs. 4, 8, 12) and why is this fact important to us?  (see Psalm 119:9-11)
  6. By what authority did Satan claim to have the right to give away the kingdoms of the world? Vs 6
  7. What did Jesus know the Father had already promised Him? (Ps. 2:7-8)
  8. What was Jesus ‘reply to Satan’s offer of power and authority? Vs 6-8
  9. Why wasn’t the devil successful in getting Jesus to do the spectacular in Verse 12?
  10. What did Satan do after Jesus resisted him in Verse 13?
  11.  How did Satan and Jesus use the Bible differently?

 III. Growing deeper

1.         Review Sunday’s message with someone.

2.        What physical needs/desires make us susceptible to temptation and what have you found are ways to prevent theses needs/desires from controlling you?

3.        When are you most tempted to put the Lord to the test, presume on His goodness or murmur about His failure to come through for you?

4.        What is the difference between testing God and relying on His promises?

5.        Read John 12:31, 14:30, 16:11, 1 Cor. 2:6, 2 Cor. 4:4, and Ephesians 2:2 - what should we know about Satan?

6.         Read 1 John 5:5. What do we need to always remember about who we are in Christ?

7.        Pray for one another.
