What It Takes to Live Victoriously  Over Temptation

Luke 4:1-13, Romans 6:1ff

Romans 6:1  Page #1130

I.          Know the Truth

  1. When Christ died, believers died with Him.
  2. When Christ resurrected, believers were made alive in Him.
  3. One day, believers will be thoroughly like Him in His resurrection.
  4. All believers died to the eternal condemnation of sin
  5. All believers died to sin being our master

II.        Consider the truth - Believers are commanded to live out who we are in Christ: dead to sin and alive to God.

  • Why do I still sin if I have a “new nature” in Christ?

Romans 6:22

I have been freed from the control of sin.

Romans 7:14-21

I am not yet free from the influence of the “flesh”.

Flesh is the presence of indwelling sin that we inherited from Adam that has not yet been removed from us. This would include the ability to rely on old thoughts, habits & feelings  to attempt to find life.

  • What am I to do about my “flesh”?

Romans 8:13 and 13:14

I am to starve and put to death the flesh.

Questions for this week:

I.  For Starters:

  1. What would you most like to change about your life right now?
  2. What does it take for people to be motivated to truly change?
  3. What do you do regularly in order to put to death sinful tendencies in your life?

II. Overview of Scripture

  1. Read Romans 6:1-14
  2. Sin is rebellion that leads to disobedient thoughts and behaviors. What does Romans 3:23 tell us about sin?
  3. What reason does Paul give that we as believers should avoid sin? Vs.1-2
  4. What does our baptism in water say about us? Vs. 3-4
  5. How is it that we can live a new life that is no longer devoted to sin? Vs 4
  6. Before a person knows Christ, what is his condition? Vs 6
  7. How does being in union with Christ change our association with sin? Vs 7
  8. What does our union with Christ now guarantee? Vs 8-10
  9. What must we do each day in overcoming temptation? Vs. 11
  10.  What is also crucial in our daily victory? Vs 12-13
  11. What now controls our life? Vs 14
  12.  How would you answer someone who says he knows he can sin because God will forgive him?

 III. Growing deeper

    1.   Review Sunday’s message with someone.

    2.   Why is it important each day and sometimes several times a day to surrender your self to the empowerment and leading of God’s Spirit? Galatians 5:16-17 and 19-24.

    3.    Read 2 Corinthians 7:1.  Meditate on this verse awhile and answer the following: Who are you to God? What has He given you? What are we to seek with His enablement? What should be a big motivator in our lives in order to live free from defilement?

   4.     Pray for one another.
