The Value Of A Baby

Luke 1:8-17

I.  God says “babies” in the womb are people created in His image.

God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.                                                               Genesis 1:27

Whoever sheds man's blood, By man his blood shall be shed,  For in the image of God He made man.                                                                  Genesis 9:6

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.                                                                                    Psalm 139:13

II.  Life at any stage deserves protection and honor because we are all created in God’s image.

If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman's husband demands and the court allows. But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life.        Exodus 21:22-23

III. Only people can be Filled with the Spirit and babies in the womb can be filled with the Holy Spirit.

IV.       What we can do to support babies in the womb and celebrate life

1. Volunteer & give financially to pro-life organizations

2. Assist single pregnant women

3. Contact politicians and vote

“I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation.  We must always take sides.  Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.  Silence encourages the tormenter, never the tormented.  Sometimes we must interfere when human lives are in danger, when human dignity is in danger.”      Elie Weisel, survivor of the Nazi Holocaust

4. Share the hope we have in Christ

5. Pray

Questions for this week:

I.  For Starters:

  1. Do you think babies in the womb have rights? Explain your answer.
  2. Would you be able to vote politically for someone who supports abortion rights? Why or why not?

II. Overview of Scripture

  1. Read Luke 1:5-17. What sticks out to you?
  2. Read the quote below and discuss. How does the “slavery” issue of our American past throw light on the issue of life in the womb? ( See Prov. 14:12, 22, 15:9 and 6:16-17)

Abortion Lincoln – by John Piper

On January 12, 2009 Samantha Heiges, age 23, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for drowning her newborn in Burnsville, Minnesota. If she had arranged for a doctor to kill the child a few weeks earlier she would be a free woman.  What are the differences between this child before and after birth that would justify it's protection just after birth but not just before? There are none. This is why Abraham Lincoln's reasoning about slavery is relevant in ways he could not foresee. He wrote:

“You say A. is white, and B. is black. It is color, then; the lighter, having the right to enslave the darker? Take care. By this rule, you are to be slave to the first man you meet, with a fairer skin than your own. You do not mean color exactly? You mean the whites are intellectually the superiors of the blacks, and, therefore have the right to enslave them? Take care again. By this rule, you are to be slave to the first man you meet, with an intellect superior to your own. But, say you, it is a question of interest; and, if you can make it your interest; you have the right to enslave another. Very well. And if he can make it his interest, he has the right to enslave you."

     3.   Read James 3:9–10.  What “truth” do we see here that is applicable to the value of a baby in the womb and our responsibility for honoring that value?

“I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation.  We must always take sides.  Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.  Silence encourages the tormenter, never the tormented.  Sometimes we must interfere when human lives are in danger, when human dignity is in danger.”     Elie Weisel, survivor of the Nazi Holocaust

  1. For those who have been deceived by the lure of abortion, what can be true of them now as they come to know Christ’s healing?  (Luke 7:40-48 -   especially vs. 47)

 III. Growing deeper

 1.  Review Sunday’s message with someone.

 2.  Pray as God leads you for the unborn and our country.
