James 3:1-12

NO MAN CAN TAME THE TONGUE

JAMES 3:1-12

 

 

A.   THE TONGUE GIVES INSTRUCTION (VS 1-2)

“Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.” (Psalm 34:13)

“A gossip betrays confidence; so avoid a man who talks too much.” (Proverbs 20:19 NIV)

B.   THE TONGUE IS INFLUENCED (VS 3-5)

“But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man.  For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.  These are the things which defile the man…..” (Matthew 15:18-29a)

C.   THE TONGUE HAS TRAITS  (V 6)

  1. Character
  2. Influence
  3. Commitment

D.   THE TAMING OF THE TONGUE  (VS 7-8)

E.   THE TONGUE IS INCONSISTENT (VS 9-12)

  1.  No human can tame the tongue
  2. God can control what man cannot
