Jesus Authority Forgive

Luke 5:12-26

  1. The setting
  2. The people
  3. The friends
  4. The man
  5. The Son of man
  6. The results
  1. The presence of Christ
  2. The eyes of Christ
  3. The life of Christ

I.  For Starters:

  1. Which is more difficult for you - to forgive others for what they have done to you or to release your past to God with what you have done to others?
  2. In what specific way recently have you seen that "a friend in need is a friend indeed"?

II. Overview of Scripture

  1. Read Luke 5:12-26.
  2. What did the leprous man do when he saw Jesus and what does this reveal about him? (12)
  3. Being covered with a terrible disease and being told he was “unclean” made him an outcast.  What do you think he might have missed the most from life?
  4. What did Jesus say to the sick man and what does this reveal about Jesus? (13)
  5. How did Jesus heal the man? (13)
  6. In what way is sin like leprosy?
  7. What were Jesus' orders to the man after he had been healed and why? (14) (See John 6:15)
  8. To whom was the man to show himself and why? (14) (See Matthew 10:5-15)
  9. Describe in your own words what is now happening in the life of Jesus. (15)
  10. What was Jesus' response to His new fame and what can we learn from this move? (16)
  11. Who was in the crowd as Jesus preached and why is this important? (17)  (See Mark 12:13, Matthew 6:1-5 and Luke 11:38-39)
  12. In your words, describe the men who brought the paralytic. What can we deduce about them? (18-20a)
  13. Read verse 20. What is important about the greeting and that the paralytic already had faith?
  14. In what ways is sin a paralysis?
  15. What did the religious leaders accuse Jesus of & what do we learn from their statement to the crowd? (21)  Now read Leviticus 24:10-16. How serious is all this?
  16. In Verse 23,  Jesus is telling them it is easy to say one’s sins are forgiven but He will show them that the man is truly forgiven. What does he want the hard hearted leaders to know? (24)
  17. What were the results of this encounter? (25-26)

III. Growing deeper

  1. Review Sunday’s message with someone.
  2. Who could benefit from you being ‘willing” to be involved in their life by giving them a healthy touch, an encouraging word or just old fashioned time?
  3. The passage ends with “we have seen remarkable (amazing) things today” (24). What is going on in your life that is amazing or remarkable?
  4. Pray for one another and for anyone who comes to mind.
