Helping Others Be Certain

Luke 1:1-4

“These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.”    1 John 5:13

“Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”  Hebrews 4:16

“…we had the boldness in our God to speak to you the gospel of God amid much opposition.”                                                       1 Thessalonians 2:2

I.    It is essential to seek to influence others & help them with certainty in their faith.

II.    Since people have not met Jesus they need to see & hear reliable witness of the   Gospel.

III.   Though we endeavor to convince, we should never trust in the convincing.

Questions for this week:

I.  For Starters:

  1. What key ‘instruments” did God use to bring you to know Him through Christ?
  2. What “evidence” would you trust in order to be certain of what you are hearing from someone?

II. Overview of Scripture

  1. Read Luke 1:1-4 out loud.  How would you summarize this section?
  2. How had Luke received his evidence? Vs 2
  3. Why did Luke need to trust in eyewitnesses?
  4. Why should we trust Luke’s historical research? Vs 3 (2 Peter 1:20-21)
  5. Describe Luke’s relationship with Theophilus?
  6. What did Luke hope to see happen in Theophilus? Vs. 4
  7. Why does correct interpretation of Scripture/facts matter so much?

(See Jeremiah 2:8, 4:22, 9:3, 12:16, 31:33-34)

III. Growing deeper

  1. Review Sunday’s message with someone.
  2. How will a correct account of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection help your evangelistic efforts?

“Preach and water (the Gospel) with tears and prayer.  Do not suppress or add to the message.  We are preaching to dry bones and God can make them come alive.”    John Newton

    3.   What do you carry out consistently in order to share the Good news with others? (example-Pray in faith? Carry tracts? Have a Bible ready?) What does your answer say about your view of evangelism?

    4.    Pray for one another that you will have “ears to hear” what God is saying through this Gospel.
