God and Government

Luke 20:19-26      Page #1049

Todd Cyphers

The purpose of government is to enable the people of a nation to live in safety and happiness. Government exists for the interests of the governed, not for the governors.   (Thomas Jefferson)

The Purpose of the U.S. Government - Constitution

  •  Form a “More Perfect” Union
  • Establish “Justice”
  • Provide for the “Common Defense”
  • Secure the “Blessings of Liberty”
  • Promote the “General Welfare”
  • Insure “Domestic Tranquility

I. What belongs to Government?

1. Taxes

Romans 13:7 - Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due…

2.Prayer

1 Tim. 2:1-2 - I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.

3.Civil obedience

Romans 13:1-2 - Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except by God’s appointment and the authorities that exist have been instituted by God.  So the person who resists such authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will incur judgment.

4.  Honor

Romans 13:7 - …give respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

 5. Be Christ-like

Matthew 5:16 - Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
