Luke 1:26-38

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.                                        Isaiah 9:6 (NASB

Questions for this week:

I.  For Starters:

  1. What do you enjoy most about this time of the year and why?
  2. Was it ever difficult for you to believe a “virgin” could have a child? Why or why not.

II. Overview of Scripture

  1. Read Luke 1:26-38 out loud. What is the tone of this section?
  2. If Jesus had a human father instead of a Heavenly Father, what would we have to surmise about Him and also about us?   (John 8:41—the Pharisees accusing Jesus)
  3. Luke was probably countering slander about Jesus and His mother with this account. One story said that Mary had sexual relations with a Roman soldier and became pregnant. Read 1 Peter 3:18 and share why it is important that Jesus was not born of two earthly parents and that He did not have a sinful nature.
  4. What did God promise in Genesis 3:15 and how does the promise match with Luke 1:34-35?
  5. What do we learn about Mary's character from her response to the angelic announcement in Luke 1:38?

III. Growing deeper

  1. Review Sunday’s message with someone.
  2. What could have been Joseph's response when he learned of Mary's pregnancy and why? (Duet 22:13-30)  What does Joseph’s wrestling with his decision show us about his character? (Matthew 1:19)
  3. Pray for one another and give thanks that   "...for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might be rich" (2  Corinthians  8:9b) & (2 Corinthians 5:21)  He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
