Promised Land: Breaking the Cycle of Unbelief and Defeat

Judges 1-2

 I. Seeds of unbelief can eventually become our downfall.   (Judges 1; 2:1-5)

II. We must continually choose between the God who sets us free and the idols that will stronghold us. (Judges 2:7-15)

  • A stronghold deceives us to rely on anything other than God, causing bondage.

 1. Refuse - Refuse the devil an opportunity.

Ephesians 4:27 - “…do not give the devil an opportunity.”

2. Resist - Submit to the Lord and resist the enemy.

James 4:7 – “…submit to God and resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

3. Ready ourselves - Be clothed with God's armor to take down strongholds.

Ephesians 6:11 – “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”

III. God’s jealousy and kindness are our only hope. (Judges 2:14-23)

Psalm 91:2-3 - “I will say to the LORD, ‘My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust! For it is He who delivers…’”

Promised Land: Breaking the Cycle of Unbelief and Defeat

Judges 1-2

1. How do you handle the discouragement of repeating the same sins?

2. How are you tempted to do what is right in your own eyes?

3. What strongholds are more difficult to identify and address that often keep people in bondage?

4. How does God’s Jealousy and Kindness lead us to repentance? (Hosea 2:19, Romans 2:4)

5. Discuss the commands of defeating strongholds. How are you doing in these areas?

6. Read Ephesians 6:11-12 and 2 Corinthians 5:14-15. Discuss how we can be used to take down strongholds in other’s lives?

7. Read Psalm 106:34-46. In the retelling of Judges, what do you notice about their foolishness and God’s character? Pray as God leads.
