I. For Starters:
- When you think of the word “different” what comes to mind?
- When someone says, “He sure is different” – What does that most often indicate?
- Does anyone in your life think you are “kind of different” and if so why?
- Read 2 Timothy 3:12. What “kind of different” is good in God’s eyes?
II. Overview of Scripture
- Read Luke 3:1-6 out loud. What do you observe by reading this section?
- What did Luke do in verses 1-2 to show he wants to get the truth right and demonstrate that he did his homework?
- How would you summarize John’s basic message? Vs 3
- Where did John minister and why is this important? (see Matthew 10:5-6 and Luke 2:34-35)
- Read the other Gospel accounts of John’s ministry of announcing the Messiah and see what you observe. Matthew 3:1-17, Mark 1:1-8 and John 1:15-42.
- John essentially was called to declare the way of Christ, prepare the way of Christ and get out of the way of Christ. How is your life and ministry like his?
III. Growing deeper
- Review Sunday’s message with someone.
- Read the following Scriptures and write out whatever God shows you about prophets and the prophetic ministry. (Exodus 3:1-12 (especially vs. 10) ; Deuteronomy 18:18 and Joshua 14:6-14 (especially vs. 14)
- Now read 1 Peter 2:1-12. What truths do you glean from this passage about yourself and in what way have you replaced people like John the Baptist and the prophets?
- Pray for one another.
