The Grain Offering – thanked God and restored Israel to serve God and neighbor

The Peace Offering – demonstrated reconciliation between God and His people

I. Atonement purifies the heart (Leviticus 5:1-6)

Sin, Guilt – The refusal to conform to, or any transgression of, the Law of God. It is disloyalty, disobedience, or the breaching of a harmonious and just relationship with God, others, self and nature.

Atonement – “to cover” - Indicates that our sin is covered so that God no longer “sees” it and we become at one with God.

Sin Offering - Secured forgiveness and atonement making cleansing, worship and service possible.

Hebrews 13:10-14

II. Atonement cleanses our conscience (Leviticus 5:14-19)

Guilt Offering – Addressed the damage of depriving others their rightful due and served to cleanse the offender’s conscience

Ezra 9; 10:19

Luke 19:8-9

The Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16:1-27)

“For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your ‘conscience’ from dead works to serve the living God.” Hebrews 9:13-14

 Preparing for Next Sunday

God Delivers: The Law’s Blessing and Curse

Deuteronomy 10: 12-22

 1. Read Deuteronomy 10:12-22 and ask the Lord to reveal Himself and His truth.

2. HIGHLIGHT a verse or truth that stands out to you and write it out.

3. EXPLAIN the text in your own words to make sure you see the big picture of God’s Story. (Who wrote it and why? To whom it was written?  What is the context? How does the text point to the Father, Son or Spirit? What is the text telling you about your new identity as a believer in Christ or how I am to live?)

4. APPLY a truth from the text to your own life.  (Focus on what God is saying to you and what is your act of obedience, confession, prayer, praise, giving thanks, etc.)

5. RESPOND in prayer and go apply what God reveals to you from the Scriptures.
