A Kingdom Established: Solomon Builds the Temple

1 Kings 5:1-5

I. The temple bears God’s name.   1 Kings 5:1-5

Psalm 29:2 - “Give to the LORD the glory due to His name…

Jeremiah 7:11 - “Has this house, which is called by My name, become a den of robbers in your sight?”

Acts 4:12 - “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

Matthew 6:9 - “Therefore, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, Your name be honored as holy.”

Colossians 3:17 - “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.”

Psalm 138:2 - “You have exalted above all things your name and your word.”

1. God’s sovereign work.

2. God’s gracious promise.

II. The temple has God’s presence.   1 Kings 8:10-12

Exodus 16:10 - “It came about as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.”

Exodus 33:9 - “Whenever Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent; and the Lord would speak with Moses.”

Exodus 40:34-35 - “Then the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. And Moses was not able to enter the tabernacle of meeting, because the cloud rested above it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.”

2 Chronicles 7:2-3 - “The priests could not enter the house of the Lord because the glory of the Lord filled the Lord’s house… seeing the fire come down and the glory of the Lord upon the house, they all bowed down…their faces to the ground… they worshiped and gave praise to the Lord, saying, ‘Truly He is good, truly His lovingkindness is everlasting.’”

III. The temple is for God’s mission.

1 Peter 2:4-5 - “As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”

Faith Sheet for Family and Friends This week

 1. How does Jesus’ speaking of Himself as the temple distinguish christianity from other religions?

2. When have you sensed the reality of God’s presence lately? What was it about that time that convinced you it was the Spirit working?

3. Talk honestly about your attitude toward gathering for worship on Sundays. What are some things you can do to prepare for worship to make it more meaningful and edifying?

4. How should our identity as the temple of the Holy Spirit instruct our everyday lives, including the mundane moments?

5. Read Psalm 67:1-7. Why does God bless us with His Spirit? Now read 1 Corinthians 6:19. What is one major way we reach our neighbors with the Gospel? Pray for someone.
